HFE, C282Y & H63D: should you avoid iron supplements?

Most supplement advice nudges you toward more iron. If you carry certain HFE variants, that's the wrong direction.

HFE sets the dial on how much iron your gut pulls in from food. Two variants show up often, C282Y and H63D, and they're the main genetic reason some people absorb and stash away more iron than they should. That condition has a name, hereditary hemochromatosis. If you've got these variants, the standard "you should take iron" line can backfire, and that's worth flagging before you reach for a supplement.

⚠ Go easy on iron supplements

You carry the HFE C282Y variant, the main genotype behind hereditary hemochromatosis (iron overload), and it hits hardest if you carry two copies. Avoid iron-containing supplements, and don't pair high-dose vitamin C with iron-rich meals, unless a doctor has reviewed your iron labs.

⚠ Be cautious with iron supplements

You carry the HFE H63D variant, tied to higher iron absorption and serum iron, most of all if you carry two copies or also have C282Y. Go easy on iron supplements unless your iron labs say otherwise.

What HFE does

Once iron piles up in your tissues, you can't just stop a supplement and walk it back easily. So for these variants the safe default is simple: skip iron-containing supplements, and don't wash down an iron-rich meal with a big dose of vitamin C, until a doctor has looked at your iron labs.

A gene result is a heads-up, not a verdict. Two blood tests, ferritin and transferrin saturation, are what actually tell you where your iron sits right now.

Your variants, decoded

C282Y rs1800562

This is the big one for hemochromatosis, and the risk runs highest when you carry two copies.

GG / typical No C282Y copy.
GA One copy, so you're a carrier.
AA Two copies, the classic high-risk hemochromatosis genotype.
H63D rs1799945

A gentler variant. It pushes iron up more if you carry two copies or pair it with C282Y.

CC / typical No H63D copy.
CG One copy.
GG Two copies, which points to higher iron absorption.

Questions

Should I avoid iron with an HFE variant?

Usually, yes. These variants lean toward iron overload, so supplementing iron can do real harm. Get iron labs and talk it through with a clinician instead of taking iron on a guess.
